Dirk shared some thoughts with his daughter Mary, who was also his caregiver: "Do not cry for me. I've been tough on a few especially, with good reason. There are some good things to say about my life. I lived it my way. I didn't have much to say at times. My time is at the end now, but I say again, I did it my way. I ran a hard race. Be good to each other, that's all that's left to say."
