Obituary

Edward Arch "Ed" James was born in 1935 at Dierks (Howard County), Arkansas, the son of Arch L. and Lela W. James. He passed away Monday morning, December 23, 2013 at a Macon hospital. He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Thomas Raymond James, of Colorado Springs, and sister, Olene, who died as a child.

Ed was a graduate of Dierks High School and earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering at the University of Arkansas, Fayetteville. In 1957, he married his college sweetheart, Shirley Ashley, a Sheridan, Arkansas native.

Ed began his civil service career as a field engineer trainee with the U. S. Department of Agriculture, REA Telephone Division, and in 1964 was transferred to Dublin as Field Engineer for the middle Georgia area. He later spent 29 years as an electronics engineer with U. S. Department of Defense at Warner Robins ALC. At the time of his retirement in 1996 he was a Supervisory Engineer in Electronic Warfare. After retirement he enjoyed spending many hours in his woodworking shop.

He was an active member and deacon at Jefferson Street Baptist Church for many years serving in many capacities, but his main interest was as an audio technician in the Audio/Visuals area. For the past eight years, he has been an active member of First Baptist Church, Dublin, serving on Ushers Committee and "Hands of Ruth" Committee.

He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Shirley Ashley James, of Dublin; two sons, Alan L. (Carol) James, of Knoxville, TN, and Brian E. James of Hoschton, GA; two grandchildren, Christopher James and Ivey James, of Knoxville; one sister, Earnestine (W. E. "Gene") Woodall, of Little Rock, AR; two nieces, Retha, W. (Dr. Rob) Hayes, of Wynne, AR, and Susan J. (Jeff) Curnutte, Colorado Springs, CO; one nephew, Thomas H. (Penelope), of Pacific Palisades, CA. He is also survived by three sisters-in-law, Dorothy A. Gregory, and Betty A. Horton, both of Sheridan, and Delphia A, Culpepper, of Hot Springs; a brother-in-law, Clyde Sites, of Sheridan, and many Ashley nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be 10:00 A.M. Saturday, December 28, 2013 at Memorial Gardens Funeral Home with Rev. Scott Culpepper officiating. Visitation will be 9:00 A.M. until service time. Burial will follow at Memorial Gardens Cemetery.
