Obituary

James A. "Jack" Winston, age 87, of Sheridan, passed away Sunday, March 31, 2019. He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Peggy Hope Winston and two sons, Danny Jack Winston and wife Christy of Arkadelphia, and Stephen R. Winston and wife Belinda of Sheridan. He was preceded in death by his son, James Timothy "Tim" Winston and his parents, S.A. Winston and Elsie Winston Venable.

Other survivors are his grandchildren, Matthew Winston and wife Michelle of Lake Hamilton, Leann King and husband Maburn of Sheridan, Jared Winston and wife Katy of Benton, and Stacy Quinton of Arkadelphia. Great grandchildren, Payton Winston of Lake Hamilton, Winston King of Sheridan, Klaire and Kyndall Winston of Benton, and Bryce and Bria Quinton of Arkadelphia.

Jack was a 1951 graduate of Sheridan High School, where he excelled as an athlete and was co-captain of his Yellowjacket football team, both his Junior and Senior years. He was all-district, all-state, and was MVP of his team, being the leading scorer in Class A football with 18 touchdowns. He was known for his speed and agility, and enjoyed winning foot races with friends and family , well into his forties. He also served his Country in the United States Army National Guard.

While working for International Paper Company as a forestry technician, he and his family were transferred to Rison, where they lived and worked for sixty years, before returning to Sheridan in 2016. He worked as a forester, and in land and timber management until he retired at age 75.

Jack accepted Jesus Christ as his Savior as a young teen and was baptized in Hurricane Creek. He was a former member of Rison Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon, an usher, a church trustee, and on various committees, and is currently a member of First Baptist Church of Sheridan. He served on the Rison City Council for several years, was an avid hunter and fisherman, and loved being at his deer camp with family.

Graveside funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Tuesday, April 2, 2019, at Lost Creek Cemetery in Sheridan with Pastor Michael Daugherty officiating, and visitation will also be Tuesday, at the funeral home, from 10:00-10:45 A.M., at which time we will travel to the cemetery in procession. Family will serve as pallbearers with Memorial Gardens Funeral Home in charge of services.

The family would like to express their thanks to the devoted caregivers at Sheridan Healthcare and Rehabilitation, and Arkansas Hospice, who so faithfully and compassionately cared for Jack during his illness.
