Obituary

Jewell Stephens Mays of Prattsville, Arkansas was born on October 24, 1916, the fifth child of Ethel Pumphrey Stephens and Albert Jackson Stephens. She died at home Monday, October 16, 2006 at the age of 89. She was a homemaker and a loving caregiver for her family. She enjoyed fishing and was an expert bridge player and champion golfer, winning state championships in 1963, 1965 and 1966. She was a life-long member of Harmony Missionary Baptist Church in Prattsville and helped establish the Prattsville Community Center.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Harry W. Mays, Sr. in 1974 and sons Harry W. Mays, Jr. in 1970 and Robert Stephens Mays in 1939; three brothers, Albert Jennings Stephens, W.R. "Witt" Stephens and Jackson T."Jack" Stephens, Sr.; one sister, Lois Stephens Lowe; two brother-in-laws, Raymond Thornton, Sr. and Keeling Lowe; one niece, Pamela Diane Stephens; and two great great nephews, Shannon Fowler and Michael Hebert.

She is survived by one sister, Wilma Stephens Thornton, of Searcy (formerly of Sheridan); sister-in-laws, Helen Halbert Stephens; Bess Chisum Stephens; Louise Williams; Willie Maud Mays, Bernadine Mays and Charlotte Mays; five nephews, Ray Thornton, Jr.; Mike Stephens; Steve Stephens, Warren Stephens, and Witt Stephens, Jr.; and three nieces, Betty Thornton Ulrey, Elizabeth Stephens Campbell, and Nancy Jewell Lowe Baker; as well as numerous nieces and nephews from the Mays family plus a host of great, great-great, and great-great-great nieces and nephews.

The family wishes to thank all the caregivers who extended "Miss Jewell's" days with their smiles and comforting ways; Juanice Pumphrey, Winnie Mae Cooper, April Hebert, Janell Benning, Melissa Christian, Diane Quimby,Dr. Pham Liem and the staff of UAMS, Dr. Jack Irvin of Sheridan,and Hospice Home Care of Pine Bluff.

A Graveside service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on October 21, 2006 at Philadelphia Cemetery in Prattsville with Pastor Shawn Hill and Brother Neal Pumphrey of the Harmony Missionary Baptist Church officiating. Visitation will follow the service at her home. There will be no visitation at the funeral home.
