Obituary

Mary Ann Ukno Bumgardner, 75, of Little Rock, Arkansas, passed away peacefully on May 18, 2025.

Born on August 31, 1949, Mary was the firstborn child of Fred and Olga Ukno. She was the eldest of four siblings, followed by her sister Martha, her brother Fred Jr., and her youngest sister Marlena. Mary shared a special bond with her mother, even sharing the same birthday. In June of 1970, Mary married Harold Edward Bumgardner. Together they built a loving home and welcomed their son, James Edward, in December 1973. Mary's role as a mother extended beyond her own household, as she played a significant part in the upbringing of her much younger sister Marlena as well.

Mary was known for her strength, humor, and fierce love for her family. Though petite in stature, she was unwavering in her convictions and well known for keeping both her son and sister in check with her signature flyswatter discipline—a light-hearted family memory cherished by many.

She found joy in life's simple pleasures: Saturday shopping trips in her father's old truck, family meals she lovingly prepared, and classic moments shared around cable TV and corner store snack runs. Her culinary skills were unmatched in the family, and her famous baked beans, meatloaf, and Coca-Cola cake remain treasured recipes passed down through generations.

Mary dedicated her life to her home and family. She was a frugal homemaker with a warm heart, a sharp wit, and a deep capacity for love. She was a devoted wife to Harold, a nurturing mother to James, and a proud mother-in-law and grandmother to Alicia and Kaitlynn. Even in her final days, Mary remained spirited, enjoying word searches, poker, and even a playful round of tic-tac-toe just two days before her passing. Her laughter, her bright blue eyes, and her unmistakable spark left a lasting impression on all who knew her.

Mary lived by the quiet creed, "Live in gracious peace and die with fearless dignity." She fulfilled that vision to the very end.

She is survived by her beloved family and will be deeply missed but never forgotten.

In her memory, may we all be reminded that even in death, love endures—and that sometimes, the simplest lives are the ones that shine the brightest.

Graveside service will be held at 2:00 P.M. Saturday, May 31, 2025, at Bethel North Cemetery in the Ico community.
