Roy Edward Winston of Sheridan, Arkansas was born January 8, 1919, the son of the late Arthur Lee "Doc" and Verna Bradley Winston. Roy was a proud World War II Veteran of the United States Army where he served as a combat engineer and Army Ranger at Omaha Beach, France, and Germany. Roy's decorations and citations include: the American Theater Ribbon, the EAME Theater Ribbon with three bronze stars, the World War II Victory medal and a Purple Heart. He was a member of First Landmark Missionary Baptist Church, Disabled American Veterans and Veterans of Foreign Wars (where he served as Commander for many years). He was an avid hunter and fisherman and little league coach.
Mr. Winston died Wednesday, November 21, 2007 at his home in Sheridan surrounded by his family at the age of 88. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Catherine Dwyer and half-sister, Delma Jean Winston.
Survivors include his wife of 61 years, Corinne Puckett Winston; sons, Winston and Wayne of Sheridan and Freddy of Prattsville; daughter, Neta Winston of Fayetteville; sister, Sybil Smith of Mammoth Spring; five grandsons, four granddaughters, Aleah, Ashley, Melody and Keeley and eleven great grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 A.M., Monday, November 26, 2007 at Memorial Gardens Funeral Home Chapel in Sheridan with Roy's grandson Eric Winston officiating. Burial with military honors will follow at Lost Creek Cemetery. Visitation will be Sunday afternoon from 2:00-4:00 P.M. Pallbearers will be grandsons and grandsons-in-law: Lance Winston, Duane, Thomas and Paul Smith, Jason Jolivette and Shaun Mc Donough. Honorary Pallbearers are Wilton Davenport, Frank Roberts, Bill Main, "Tiger" Nelson, Wayne Hooten, Orville Baker, Joe Appling and members of the 1955 Sheridan Little League Championship team "The Yanks".
