Wanda Lynn McClung Hicks, 72, of Deale, Maryland was born August 16, 1931 at Sheridan, Arkansas, the daughter of the late Ocie Jeff and Floy Alma Atchley McClung. She died Thursday, April 8, 2004 at Calvert Memorial Hospital in Prince Frederick, Maryland . In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother, Ray A. McClung and a sister, Helen Louise Gilbert.
She was a member of Ephesus Missionary Baptist Church in Sheridan; was a graduate of Sheridan High School; Received a BA in Elementary Education from Lyon College, Batesville, Arkansas; an MA in Special Education from the University of Texas, and in 2002, she received an Honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters from Lyons College. She was a public school teacher specialist working with the hearing and vision impaired, and taught at Gallaudet University in Washington, DC from 1975 to 1992. She enjoyed sewing, artwork, collecting antiques and in addition, lectured throughout the United States and published articles in major educational journals dealing with hearing and vision impaired students.
Survivors are husband, Doin E. Hicks of Deale, Maryland; Daughter, Janet Elaine Vance and husband Bob of Upper Marlboro, Maryland; Sisters, Bonnie Sue Herron of Hot Springs, Arkansas; Glyndel Gartman of Carlisle, Arkansas; Aunts: Winnie Reaves and Zella Adams, both of Sheridan, Arkansas; and grandson, Alexander Thomas Vance of Upper Marlboro, Maryland.
Funeral Services are Monday, April 12, 2004 at 11:00 AM at Memorial Gardens Funeral Home Chapel in Sheridan, Arkansas with Dr. Basil Hicks and Bro. William Ashcraft officiating. Burial at New Hope Cemetery near Sheridan. Visitation: 5-7 PM Sunday at the funeral home.
